  The enhancement in the electrochemical strain of the PPy-zigzag metal wire composite film actuator is attributable for the convertion of three-dimensional deformation into the axial deformation in the PPy-zugzag metal wire composite actuator.

Artificial Muscles Based on Conducting Polymers for Robots

 
The PPy-zigzag metal wire composite film actuator can be piled up to create huge force. An encapsulated cell with a muulti-layer PPy-zigzag metal wire composite has been named Artificial Muscle Cell.
We have developed an artificial muscle cell comprising polypyrrole-zigzag metal wire composite CP actuators for driving robots, for instance. The artificial muscle cell, comprising an electrolytic solution and a counter electrode to drive CP actuators, can be used as if it were a conventional electric motor.
Flexible design of the artificial muscle cell makes it possible to fabricate thin devices by using a film actuator.

Further, a novel filmy composite actuator enables to fablicate multi-layered actuators without much loss of actuator performance.
The newly-developed filmy composite actuator exhibits large electrochemical strain, almost twice as large as the corresponding CP film actuator. A big artificial muscle cell can be easily fabricated by piling up the composite actuators.
